Above All Put on Love

But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. - Col. 3:14

As the salt of the earth and the light of the world, we should, above all, put on love. We glorify the Lord when we represent His love and grace. An illustration often used to describe our interactions with others involves three utensils: a fork, a knife, and a spoon.

A fork picks at others constantly and is negatively critical, never mentioning the wonderful traits in others. There is love and care, but it’s inconsistent and unreliable. One day it’s one way, the next it’s another. The relationship is highly unpredictable.

A knife cuts people off, is destructive, sharp, and has no mercy. There is no forgiveness, understanding, or grace. Often, someone who uses a knife approach has been abandoned by a caregiver and hides behind a thick wall, unable to commit and living in constant fear.

As Christ’s ambassadors, we are to be like spoons. A spoon gently scoops up others with love and kindness, holding them in high esteem. We love one another through our actions, not just words. The way we speak to one another and walk in love and truth is proof to others that we walk in the Spirit. Let's pray for the Holy Spirit to enable us to be spoons,  from glory to glory.
