The Power of Guarding Our Words

Whoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles. Prov. 21:23

Words spoken in anger or from the flesh can cause deep hurt, both to ourselves and others. When we submit our tongue to the Lord, He enables us to tame it, so our words edify and minister grace to those who hear. Understanding the power of our words, we pray for God’s grace to guard our mouths. When we speak out of turn, the sword of the Spirit—the Word of God—cannot flow freely.

We must be vigilant against the enemy’s attempts to pull us into harmful conversations. Gossip is particularly destructive. Sometimes, remaining silent can imply agreement with what is being said. It’s often best to remove ourselves from improper conversations or to express a desire not to participate. Talebearers spread rumors and lies, causing great harm within the Body of Christ and beyond.

Presenting opinions as facts can lead to misinformation that destroys relationships. While we cannot control the words of others, we can condemn every word spoken against us in judgment. We are equipped to speak the truth of God’s Word with authority and power, following the Lord’s leading. The power of guarding our words comes from the Holy Spirit. As we surrender our tongue to Him, our words reflect His love and truth, from glory to glory!
