The Power of the Tongue

"But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so" James 3:8-10 NKJV).

One of the powerful ways to stir up the gift of God's Spirit within us is through our words. To stir up means to ignite, inflame, and energize our mind, strength, and zeal. The tongue, though small, can quickly spread a fire of blessing or cursing, of life or death. The power of the tongue can direct or destroy.

We must not bless God and curse men—who are made in His image-with the same mouth. Our words should bring life, not destruction. By surrendering our tongues to the Lord, we allow Him to tame this unruly member and prevent it from spewing venomous words. Practicing the discipline of listening before speaking helps us yield to His guidance. As we stir up the gift of God within us, we keep the fire of the Spirit burning in our hearts.

Let's use our tongues to bless God and others with words of life. Let's praise His holy name and boldly declare that Jesus is Lord! The Spirit of God overcomes the spirit of fear that tries to hold us back from walking in our divine identity and purpose. As we pray, worship, and witness, we fan into flame the gift of God within us, from glory to glory!
