Are You Looking For Comfort?

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NKJV).

We can become overwhelmed by the stress and pressures of life and look for comfort in a variety of ways. A warm drink with our favorite cookie. A plushy throw spread over our shoulders. Our most cherished pajamas, robes, and slippers by a cozy fireplace. A kind embrace from a loved one. A good movie with our preferred snack. The physical comfort they bring feels wonderful, but it is only temporary. We long for the comfort only God can give.

In all our search for comfort, let’s remember to reach out to the comfort of the Holy Spirit. He is our Great Comforter, our Abiding Helper. He calms our fears and dries our tears. His comfort is strengthening, an impartation of the life of Christ. He holds us with a tight grip of love and grace. He is a loving, wise, faithful, and unwearied comforter.

The more the afflictions, the more we can depend on God’s loving care. We can reach out to Him by faith; He then uses that for us to comfort others. We realize what He has done after the fact. He gives us a crown of beauty instead of ashes, replaces our mourning with the oil of gladness, and a garment of praise for a spirit of heaviness. He is the God of all comfort, from glory to glory!
