Standing Firm After the Victory

Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. - 1 Kings 19:2-3

After Elijah’s great victory on Mount Carmel, Jezebel threatened his life, and in that moment, Elijah did what we must avoid—he looked at himself, his situation, and the potential threat to his life, and he ran away. Overcome with fear and despair, he wanted to die. When Elijah kept his eyes on the Lord, he was victorious; when he focused on himself, he felt defeated. What a powerful lesson for us!

The enemy often attacks us right after a breakthrough, trying to pull us into despair just as we’ve experienced a victory. We face battles before, during, and especially after steps of obedience. The adversary’s goal is to prevent us from repeating what we’ve just accomplished and to push us into retreat. Standing firm after the victory will stop his conniving ways.

After stepping out in faith and witnessing God’s power, our human state can be fragile, making us vulnerable to the enemy’s schemes. In these moments, we must choose to stay close to people of faith whom we trust and find rest in the Lord’s strength. His peace protects us, His power frees us, and His love comforts us, from glory to glory!
